Oscar Nominations 2025: Here are the Nominees

The nominations for the 97th Academy Awards were unveiled on Thursday in Los Angeles, with the musical crime drama Emilia Pérez leading the pack with an impressive 13 nominations. Among its accolades, the film achieved a historic milestone as Karla Sofía Gascón became the first transgender performer in Oscar history to earn a nomination for Best Actress.

While Emilia Pérez dominated the nominations, one significant omission stood out: Selena Gomez, who was widely expected to secure a nomination for Best Supporting Actress, was notably absent from the list. Gomez had previously been recognized in the same category by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) and the Golden Globes.

Close behind Emilia Pérez were the historical epic The Brutalist and the musical Wicked, each earning 10 nominations. The Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown and the papal thriller Conclave followed with eight nominations apiece.

This year’s announcement also highlighted a number of first-time nominees. Sebastian Stan received his first Oscar nomination for Best Actor for his performance in The Apprentice, with Jeremy Strong earning a nod in the Best Supporting Actor category for the same film. Other newcomers to the Best Supporting Actor category include Yura Borisov (Anora), Kieran Culkin (A Real Pain), and Guy Pearce (The Brutalist).

The Best Actress category features several first-time nominees, including Gascón, Mikey Madison (Anora), Demi Moore (The Substance), and Fernanda Torres (I’m Still Here). Meanwhile, the Best Supporting Actress category boasts debut nominations for Monica Barbaro (A Complete Unknown), Ariana Grande (Wicked), Isabella Rossellini (Conclave), and Zoe Saldaña (Emilia Pérez).

The nominations were announced by Wicked star Bowen Yang and comedian Rachel Sennott, both of whom brought energy and humor to the event.

This year’s Oscars come against a backdrop of challenges, as the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) had to postpone the announcement twice due to devastating wildfires in the Los Angeles area. Despite these setbacks, the ceremony remains scheduled for Sunday, March 2.

AMPAS CEO Bill Kramer and President Janet Yang emphasized the Academy’s commitment to supporting relief efforts for those affected by the wildfires. “Our members always share how important it is for us to come together as a community, and we are determined to use this opportunity to celebrate our resilient and compassionate industry,” the Academy stated. “We also look forward to honoring our frontline workers who have aided with the fires, recognizing those impacted, and encouraging people to join the Academy in supporting the relief efforts.”

As anticipation builds for the ceremony, this year’s Oscars promise to celebrate not only cinematic excellence but also the resilience and solidarity of the film community.
