Meet Avatar 3’s New ‘Ash Clan’

After 13 long years, audiences around the globe have eagerly returned to the mesmerizing world of Pandora with the release of Avatar: The Way of Water last Friday. Directed by cinematic visionary James Cameron, the sequel invites viewers to once again explore the lush jungles, crystal-clear waters, and serene skies of the verdant Na’vi moon. And the adventure doesn’t stop there – Cameron is already preparing to transport audiences back to Pandora at the end of 2025 with the highly anticipated third installment, Avatar: Fire and Ash.

Building on the foundation laid by Avatar (2009), the highest-grossing movie of all time, and its sequel The Way of Water, the next chapter in Jake and Neytiri’s journey will take their family into uncharted territories. This time, audiences will meet the ‘Ash Clan’ – a new group of Na’vi with their own unique relationship to the land. However, this encounter may not unfold as harmoniously as Jake and Neytiri’s eventual alliance with the ocean-loving Metkayina clan in The Way of Water.

The latest issue of Empire magazine offers an exclusive first look at Avatar: Fire and Ash, introducing the Ash Clan and their formidable leader, Varang. “Varang is the leader of a people who have endured incredible hardship. She’s hardened by that experience,” Cameron explains. “She will do anything for her people, even things we might perceive as evil.”

In this installment, Cameron aims to challenge the simplistic dichotomy of good versus evil. “One thing we wanted to do in this film is avoid black-and-white storytelling,” he shares. “We’re trying to evolve beyond the idea that all humans are bad and all Na’vi are good.” For the first time, the conflict may not center solely on the human-led RDA as the antagonists.

With Avatar: Fire and Ash promising to delve deeper into the complexities of Pandora’s inhabitants and their struggles, fans can look forward to yet another groundbreaking cinematic experience from James Cameron. As the Sully family ventures into these new and dangerous realms, one thing is certain: the world of Pandora continues to captivate and expand in ways we’ve never seen before.
