Celebrating Excellence: The 31st Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards

The Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards celebrate the finest performances in film and television, with winners chosen by their fellow actors. Unlike other major awards, the SAG Awards are voted on by fellow actors, making them a unique and highly respected accolade. Established in 1995, these awards honor the craft of acting and highlight the industry's best talents. The 31st annual SAG Awards, held on (23rd February 2025) Sunday night and streamed live on Netflix from the Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall in Los Angeles, continued this tradition by celebrating the best in acting talent.

FILM CATEGORY WINNERS

In the film categories, Conclave won the award for Best Performance by a Cast, solidifying its place as one of the standout films of the year. Timothée Chalamet was named Best Leading Actor for his performance in A Complete Unknown, while Demi Moore secured the Best Actress in a Leading Role award for The Substance.

The supporting role categories saw Kieran Culkin win Best Supporting Actor for A Real Pain, while Zoe Saldaña was awarded Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Emilia Pérez.

TELEVISION CATEGORY WINNERS

On the television side, Shogun dominated the night, winning three awards, including Best Drama Series Ensemble. Anna Sawai took home the award for Best Actress in a Drama Series, while Hiroyuki Sanada won Best Actor in a Drama Series for his role in the show.

In the comedy categories, Only Murders in the Building was recognized as the Best Comedy Series Ensemble, with Martin Short winning Best Actor in a Comedy Series for his performance. Jean Smart continued her streak of success, winning Best Actress in a Comedy Series for Hacks.

Jessica Gunning added another trophy to her collection by winning Best Actress in a TV Movie or Limited Series for Baby Reindeer, just a day after her Independent Spirit Award win for the same role. Colin Farrell was honored as Best Actor in a TV Movie or Limited Series for The Penguin.

STUNT PERFORMANCES AND SPECIAL HONORS

The winners in the stunt ensemble categories were announced during the preshow, with The Fall Guy winning for Film and Shogun taking the honor in Television.

A highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Life Achievement Award to the legendary Jane Fonda, recognizing her decades of contributions to film, television, and activism.

A NIGHT OF CELEBRATION AMID CHALLENGES

The awards show, hosted by Kristen Bell—who was also nominated for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series for Nobody Wants This—faced some challenges leading up to the ceremony. Last month, the guild had to cancel its live nominees’ announcement due to the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles. In response, they urged people to contribute to relief efforts by donating to the SAG-AFTRA Foundation’s natural disaster relief fund to support those affected.

Despite the challenges, the 31st SAG Awards successfully celebrated the best in film and television, bringing together some of the biggest names in the industry for a night of recognition, inspiration, and camaraderie.
